bicycle touring over 65 years of age - what experience do WSL members have

Elder touring
Hi Bob - absolutely no problems! Did my first cross Canada ride at 63, then again at 66 and was able to manage 200kms/day. Bike fully loaded with camping gear, tools, spares, clothes, etc weighing 110 lbs including the bike! If you have any specific queries, let me know! Dave ( www.bicycletrek.org )

Hi Bob
You asked about experience of over 65 touring. Not a problem at all. We are 2 Kiwis Iam 71 and Ken 73. Last year we rode from london to Rome - did shortish days only 40 to 70km a day. Carried all our gear including a tent which we used about a third of the time. There was a fair bit of pushing eg up to the summit of the Grande St Bernard Pass but that is fine - rather like having a Zimmer Frame. I hadnt riden a bike for about 45years but soon got reaquanted with it. This year we plan to ride from Hamburg to venice starting in about 6 weeks time.
Go for it it knocks years off your age
Tricia
Not yet Elders!?
We're only nearing 60's but raise some (non-cyclist) eyebrows when talking of our imminent trip, across France & Corsica -into Italy over about 2.5 months. Like Tricia & Ken we camp most of the way & carry enough to get by on. Impressed at restarting after 45 years - good reference to others. We did a similar trip 30 years ago (before kids) but feel we are more able now & the info on routes, rosds etc is so much better. Lonely Planet, Cycling in France will provide a bit of a backbone (& reliable camping locations) but the freedom to wander is the big attraction.
In NZ we spend time working out quieter (& often more interesting) routes that avoid our often overloaded roads. with a down turn in work we decided it was time again for a decent length trip. May be we will see Tricia & Ken on the road. Anyone contemplating - do it!
Hey Not 65 yet but "just" 50
Hey
Not 65 yet but "just" 50 woman with asthma I am on the bike now for 14 months started Alaska, did the Great Divide mountain bike route and now already in Belize, it is all between your ears, and do what you can handle during one day, take a rest if necessary.
ENJOY, the experiences will fuel you
