Trail of the Coeur D' Alene, Idaho
Just completed the Trail of the Coeur D'Alene which runs across Northern Idaho from Plummer (near the Washington border) to Mullan, (near the Montana Border). Though the total route, roundtrip, is 144 miles, we ended up putting in 160 miles over 4 days, finishing the route, but also doing some side trips. This trail is a Rails-to-Trails conversion so the entire route is paved asphalt over an old railroad bed. This was hands-down the best ride experience I have ever had, I would highly recommend it to anyone, beginner to expert. The trail is primarily flat so if you are a beginner you can pick and choose how far you want to go each day, moseying through incredible views, without having to be confronted with any huge climbs. (There is a 3% grade at one end of trail, which seems pretty insignificant when you are riding up it, but a blast coming down! You can also avoid this completely by simply not riding the last portion) If, on the other hand you are an experienced rider and want a challenge, or a good training ride, you can get going fast and hard and strive to complete one-way (72 miles)each day. The real beauty of the trail lies in the scenery, it is spectacular! Multiple lakes, rivers tumbling over rocks, farmland, pine covered hills, marshes full of waving grasses and herons; the trail travels through diverse landscapes. I live in the Northwest, in the middle of gorgeous country, and I would say the landscape of Northern Idaho surpassed my own stomping grounds! We actually camped out so that meant we hauled our gear on our bikes, which though a challenge, wasn't as bad as I expected and really felt like an accomplishment. Lastly, the people were a real friendly bunch, both the locals and the other cyclists on the trail. I would suggest you do the route early in the morning, thereby avoiding rides in the hot sun, and enjoying the wildlife which seems to be out in force in the early hours. There are not a whole lot of food/water options so you do have to plan ahead, there are certainly enough places but this is not an urban ride! Hope some of you get a chance to enjoy it!
