Website Redesign!
Despite years of neglect, I think we're on track for a serious website redesign this year. We have a basic mockup, and a plan, and have even engaged an experienced designer as a "coach". Member Josh Miller has kindly agreed to push this forward. I plan to be doing most of the actual implementation work.
Josh's first-round mockup is below.
Our basic plan is in a google doc which you can comment on. You're welcome to follow along, and if you have a major interest in this, you can have edit privileges.
I'll try to keep up this page with information about progress and other documents, so if you comment on it, you'll receive notifications of future comments.

WS Website redesign
Hey Randy and all others,
I don't have the chops to do the redesign but I'm more than willing to provide positive review and analysis of the design. I could even try to set up a "focus group" meeting to have a few folks look at the design as it develops to see how the public see things. Just let me know.

I would say the following: -
I would say the following:
- Keep it simple. That reduces congestion & confusion for development.
- Auto sign-in (cookies)
- One map, a large map
- Provide a tool for GPX file export, for a handful of addresses, not your data set.
- focus on tools that will build the active membership base. Perhaps expire and email stagnant users. Maybe engage posting of pictures and/or videos.
Glad you'll be following along
It will be great to have you following along.
You should note that
1. We already delete all inactive members annually
2. We already do login via cookie. Unless you exit your browser, in which case you have to log in again. This is a result of how many times people use WS in internet cafes and the like. I configured it this way after going to Warmshowers in a remote hotel in Panama and finding it already logged in with somebody's account :-) But I'm open to changing this. Again, it's a simple configuration option.
I definitely like having a "favorites list" for members that can be downloaded, etc. That will get in here at some point.
Could you write that up as a more focused feature request on https://github.com/rfay/Warmshowers.org/issues ?
OK, good that you delete
OK, good that you delete inactive users.
When I mean auto-login, you can have a login sequence that provides a conditional to say "remember me on this computer". I've never had it log in for me.
The board should review suggestions and mold them into valid features that support policy.
Great!!! I support.
I already expressed to Randy offline but I would like to repeat my support to this awesome design.
I could support with:
- html5 integration
- SEO
Cheers.
List view?
I would like to have the option to view a list of hosts as well, in addition to the map. The list would be populated using a name, location or keyword search ("vegetarian" for instance). The list could for example show the first few sentences of the host description and could be sorted based on last login, whether the host has been marked as responsive and so on.
I think this would be a faster way of finding the hosts that have the greatest probability of responding. I also think it's nice to be able to narrow down on a few "top priority" hosts by glancing at the descriptions - I'm usually very flexible when it comes to the location of the host (hey, I have a bike!) and would rather try to contact the people that seem the nicest!
For me, the ideal solution would maybe be to have two tabs ("List" and "Map") which both show the same result set, just in different ways.
iPhone ≤ 3 gen based.
I have an iTouch old generation and would like to have warmshowers app on it but it doesnt run since it cant update to the 4th version.
If possible I would like to use it, if not, I will buy someday a newer iTouch/iPhone.
Thats my only petition.
