Postcode is important ..and useful !

The New WSL website asks for our postcodes – why is that ?

Well, members may not realise that in some countries ( most of Europe, and also in Australia, at least ) postcodes give a very useful indication of where any location is …..in relation to others !

For the cyclist [ just like for the Post Offices] , this means, that “locations” can be “sorted” easily into …the most energy efficient “order” for “delivery” …!
In the case of WSL , our “delivery” is the cyclist who is probably tired and maybe cold & hungry as well!

In Europe, ( excluding at least Britain), most locations can be expressed minimally by a simple numerical code alone , (ie without “town name” or “State/province” !) Thus, all “Berlin” postcodes will be …… ; or all Paris suburbs will start with …. [Note that British and Canadian codes have their own logic, that is much more complex than this !]

In Australia, the first digit denotes the “State” and the next three indicate … the relative distance from the metropolitan centre ! So – with a little practice – it’s usually easy to tell from the Postcode alone if a “location” is part of the metropolitan area, or a in a rural area – and the cyclist can plan their journey accordingly !

So, a WSL grouped by Postcode will (generally) group “locations” in the same general region together , in a way that a simple “alphabetical” sort will NOT do
But as inexpert humans, we don’t always understand numbers alone, so we can ALSO use simple “names” to refer to the places where we happen to live .

So, in relation to WSL, if we can provide BOTH “suburb Name” AND “Postcode”…we have the best way to both FIND and GROUP any particular “location” ….

Now I understand that this is NOT the case in the USA , or Canada : people tell me that in those countries , Postcodes have no real application other than for the Post Offices. Maybe that’s true ..!

But for the rest of WSL..please…give your Postcode ! You may make it a little easier for a tired and grateful traveller to accept your generous offer ….

Postal code

I would strongly encourage calling too. For example I live in an area of Tennessee where the zipcode spans (3) different counties. It has caused us a lot of problems, because we don't live in the county where the zipcode is used the most. Our  mail gets routed to the wrong location many times. So, calling to verify location is definitely a must.

USA post codes

here is a website which demonstrate the zipcode / postal code locations on a map. They are not quite the same setup as other countries but it does give a general location indicator
