After a few months in Australia I am in Vietnam. Someone has gone cycling in Cat Ba Island, Halong Bay? Is it good place to go with the bike or better if I leave my bike in Hanoi and take a tour to visit Halong Bay?

Hi, we were there in Dec last year. Don't take the tour! We cycled to Halong Bay in 3 days without any problems. There is plenty of accommodation and everyone will try to sell you a boat trip etc. They are all pretty much the same, so haggle and get a good deal. The organized tours from Hanoi are tourist traps with a fixed itinerary and you are dragged through all the stalls to buy food etc. Also, as you turn onto the Halong Bay road look out for the scooters trying to sell accomm, it is cheaper to ask at the hotels.

Thanks for the information! I try to go directly to Cat Ba and find there some Guesthouse cheap. My idea is rent a kayak to visit the area.

About your Halong trip. We arrived today in cat ba by ferry boat. We plan to visit 2 days. Did you toke the boat betwen Cat ba and Halong city with bicycle from Ben beo harbour? If yes how much dis you payed for this?

I arrived to Cat Ba from Tuan Chau island. In the north of cat ba, near halong city. Very nice trip by ferry 70.000 Dongs.
To go out of Cat Ba I took 2 ferries to arrive Hai Phong. I took the ferry in Cau Phu ferry station, in the west coast of Cat Ba.this ferry go to Cat Hai island and after you need to ride bycicle 7 km to other ferry station in the other part of the island.
Those ferries only use local people. Only 20.000 Dongs. Was great!
You can ask in the cat ba city about this ferries.
