The search by city, state etc appears to be broken for about a week now.
The moment any character is typed in the search box, the following error pops up.
An AJAX HTTP error occurred.

I can confirm this also (Firefox 48.0.2 on Linux).

Hi,
since few days it's not possible for me to apply tags on message . I use Firefox on a mac book air but it's the same with Chrome.
Fred
We have the same problem here, using aMacBook Pro 2016 on Safari and Chrome.
By the way, we love these functions, helping us to categorize all the emails that we sometimes have to send, as now so many people just don't answer!
no problem with "Search by City" here ( using Chrome on old Dell lappie...)
https://www.warmshowers.org/search/wsuser/adelaide
BTW : my "City" is 80km long x about 25 wide, so I'd prefer to search the Map if I could , mapless results can be quite misleading....
That is not the location search, you are using the keyword search, although it seems now after clearing the error window one can continue to search by city.
I'm not sure what is misleading about mapless results. When searching in cities with 50,100,200 or more 'hosts' the list search becomes far more useful than randomly clicking pins on a map (or at least it would if it was sorted by something more relevant than distance from an arbitrary city centre).
"...I'm not sure what is misleading about mapless results. When searching in cities with 50,100,200 or more 'hosts' the list search becomes far more useful than randomly clicking pins on a map .."
Have ever been a Guest , Paul ? In my city for instance, if you arranged a Stay without consulting a map, ( ie based on the Hosts' Profile information) you could easily have an 80km ride between the first two possible hosts, let alone all the others ...how to choose between them ?
In my experience, at least here in Australia, it's very common for Hosts to list themselves by their *metropolitan* mega-location, rather than their "local" position - for instance, the one the Post office would use to bring a letter to their home.
I find it remarkable that many Hosts have no idea of the effort involved in finding & travelling to their sites by * bicycle* , as distinct to arriving by car, bus or aeroplane (!). Busses and planes go to mega-locations ; bicycles need a much finer resolution. And the Map at least potentially provides that.
I have said elsewhere here, that I estimate that a WS traveller usually doesn't want to go much more than (say) 5km out of their way to reach a Host. A text list doesn't help with that need.
FWIW : it would be interesting to poll members on : "..how far out of your way will you go to visit / access a Host?"
What hosts 'list' themselves under is of no consequence, again you are thinking of the keyword search not the location search. The location search lists hosts with their distance from the city centre - as it is sorted by that factor it would be highly unusual that you would have an 80km ride between the first two possible hosts (in your city for instance the first 6 hosts are all in the exact same location).
Having cycled into and out of numerous cities with populations >10 million on tour I think I have some idea of what is involved but that is largely irrelevant, the list search is based on the same geographic information the map search is, if we ever implement the possibility to sort by some more useful factors it would very much come into it's own when searching amongst hundreds of hosts (most of whom are false positives) in a large metropolitan area.
As it is guests have the unenviable choice between randomly clicking on dozens of map pins (whilst having to remember which they have clicked on and which they have not) which give no indication of the hosts' receptiveness to requests only to be given information of almost no consequence (a name and possibly an address) or getting a list with some profile information and distance but not orientation from city centre - neither is currently cut out to do the job with any degree of efficiency in large metropolitan areas but I know which has the most potential
Paul Harper : "... (in your city for instance the first 6 hosts are all in the exact same location)..."
As I read it, the text List is very tediously uninformative and out-of-date. Be that as it may, in fact of the first three ( those I can bear to read), the distance between them is ~ 20km ( despite all listing themselves as in the " same place"). Without the map, I would not know that.
However, this is clearly well over my pay grade. I leave it to you .
Assuming you are finally looking at the location search instead of the keyword search (which I doubt), as I told you before it's based on exactly the same geographic information as the map, so no you will see no difference on the map compared to the distances calculated in the list search. I don't know how else to put it, it is literally the same geodata (longitude, latitude). Take the first six names when searching for Adelaide, Australia then zoom in to the centre of Adelaide and there they are 6 markers with little more than 50 metres between them.
Not sure what you mean by out of date either - again the same hosts appear on the map as appear on the location list search based on the same geographic information, so if they are out of date on the list I guess they are similarly out of date on the map.
it's strange nobody found the way to solve that ?
You can still work around the error, it is just the auto-complete that is failing. Click OK on the error window until you have finished typing all the search text in for the city then click on list search, it will still function.
The "work around" does not work for map search, only list.
That's true, I didn't realise it wasn't working either. You should create a new forum post for it or a file a new bug report on github.
same here, on mac laptops
Still getting that error. Posted about it in the website bug section.
The error occurs when I type anything in the "search by location" area. I have to click "ok" several times before I finish typing the city name and once more before I click on "list." It's been 2 months since the OP posted about this and it still hasn't been fixed.

We are working on an update to the website software that will resolve this problem.
