Hi, we plan on cycling through the baltic countries into Russia (St. Peterbourg). From there we cycle to Moskow for boarding the transsibirian train to Irkutsk, cycle aroung lake Baikal and further to Ulaanbataar. Does anyone has experience having done a similar trip? How about visa for Russia. Can you get more than 1 month? And how about taking bikes on the transsibirian train? Thanks, Patrik

Hi,
for more than 4 weeks you need a business visa. Apply it in your home country. The date for exit is fixed. So be sure when you want to go.
For using the Transsib you need a separate place for your bike. Think about to put in a bed with your stuff you`ve to pay for.
We are thinking of doing something similar, train from Barcelona to Saigon, via the Trans Siberian and Beijing, can you let us know how you get on, please. We are taking 2 trikes with us to cycle from Saigon to Phuket via Cambodia and Bangkok.

Hi, in 2012 I cycled from Germany to Irkutsk and further to the east side of the Baikal.
I recommend to use a Visa Agency (maybe 60 Euro for Russia plus visa cost). I got a 3 month business visa with double entry. The Agency does this every day and know the unofficial visa rules (e. g. you dont need all documents the embassy officially wants).
Get mirrors on your bikes. It helps a lot in Russia.
It is difficult to get AROUND the Baikal. Some Maps are very optimistic. Check out this older german report:

If you fail to go around the whole Baikal: In 2012 was a passenger ferry once a week from Ust-Barguzin to Irkutsk, called "Raketa".
