Hey Crystal,
I also have a loose plan to cycle New Zealand this coming winter (2019-20). I will have a 2 week vacaction around that time, although the dates are not decided yet. It will likely be late december and/or early january. From the little bit of research that I've done, the North island seems ideal for me (it has Hobbiton and the weather will be a bit warmer). Let's keep in touch and if we can't coordinate an entire ride, we should at least meet up for a bit.
best

Google tour aotearoa and also look at the tour aotearoa Facebook page. Could give you some good ideas. Forget about doing the organized event as to do this you must average 100 km a day. But is a good route to follow but take your time
2020 is a brevet year with around 1000 cyclists in 10 waves from early February. If you like the company and camp etc you'll be fine. If you wantg a less converyoir belt experience start in thged South Island. Or diy your own route avpoidfing the TA highway. West coast NI is fantastic and will have very little cycling or car traffic.
Hey Crystal. I'm also going to be out in New Zealand on bike this year (assuming I manage to find one!). I'm arriving late Novemeber, but probably setting off in the New Year. You're welcome to get in touch closer to the time and see if we can ort out a meet up. Likewise other cyclists on the road there in 2020 :)
For those who are planning to cycle through the central North Island please be aware that there are two road closures which may impact on your plans.
SH 4 Between Raetihi and the intersection with Fields Track - a common route from Raetihi to Whanganui.
SH 3 Ashhurst to Woodville (Manawatu Gorge)
Both are caused by major slips, and both will take major work to fix. Alternate routes are available.
A section of SH43 from Taumarunui to Startford is also closed - even to cyclists - as the road is unstable. A significant detour is in place

So I'm all booked for Jan4th-Jan26th on the North Island. I'll be starting in Auckland, heading to the east coast and circling back through the middle for a little 4 week roundabout. I will need to movie fast as I have limited time so will try to be covering rougly 50 miles per day. If that pace suits you, perhaps we can ride together.
