We start our bike tour from Toulouse to Istanbul in some days, via Sardaigne and Sicile where we shall be in april. The prices of campings found in the guidebooks are terribly high. is there no cheap camping in that areas ? And we are not used of wild camping. is it possible and easy in those islands ? is there not too much risks of trouble or thieves in Italy ?
Thanks for your advices.

bon vent petits chanceux !!!
Bonjour,
Hey I hope my answer doesn't come too late!
Just to say forget about campings!
I've been travelling 6 months last year (half on my own), never been to a camping ! Wild camping is so much more fun !
Don't worry you will find out how as you go along.
It is especially easy in Sardaigna (I've done the west coast) where it is very wild, and people warm and welcoming. The only thing is that they lack water in some parts, so we had to stop cars to get a refill at some point.
Other than that, there is so many gorgeous wild spots you can wildcamp in, you won't know which one to chose :)
My advices (as a lonely woman):
1- Start looking for a spot BEFORE you get tired
2- Get food and water for the evening at midday, you may not find anything for hours and hours long
3- Once you've decided to search for a spot, begin to take smaller and smaller roads and just see where it leads up to (most of the times: a good spot) sometimes you will have to walk a bit, pushing the bikes.
4- you can go back and look again, don't panic if you don't find it right away (that's why you should look BEFORE you are tired)
5- Personnally, when I am alone, I don't hesitate to go back on main road and start again further if anyone sees me in the small roads, so that I avoid the possibility to be "found" later on, for my security, and to avoid dealing with the "is it authorized?" question. I am very respectful and discret and leave the spot cleaner than it was if it wasn't. Thus I don't feel guilty if I may have been sleeping on some removed part of private property. That beeing said, twice we "had" (to get the boat, too close to cities) to camp in fields in Sardaigna, twice the landlord discovered us and invited us for a drink at his farm)
6- If you don't want to be seen, cover up your reverberating stuff on your bike, it can be seen from very far away if a car light hits them from a road accross the valley for example
But you will "feel" with experiment if hiding is necessary or not
7- if you are in a mountain kind of landscape, go either to the "top" or the "bottom" if you can, there often are more flat spots than on the sides of the roads. Or just don't wait for the last minute to find a spot it can go miles before you find one again. Sometimes I had to "cheat" and deliberatly went on private properties (empty vacation camp, end of a resort, close or old abandonned house grounds after escalading something or finding the door just pushed and not locked)
6- In "cities" (small ones in Sardaigna) you can find weird no-man's lands where you will be just fine
7- Trust your instincts !
8- Enjoy !!!!!!
Beware of: ants nests, beeing too close to farms with dogs that bark all night feeling your presence on "their" land, beeing too close to churches that ring bells all night long, not so flat spots where you find yourselves sleeping with heads down, beeing too exposed to winds and storms in altitude, beeing too deep in forests because at night it is very busy, noisy, inhibited by all sorts of curious animals (not dangerous, just wakes you up), NEVER leave food in your tent, always hang it in some branch, and beware of wild boars: they will not harm youunless:
1- you suprised the mum with her kids
2- you camp ON their usual trails (its easily recognisable)
I NEVER leave my bike unattached wherever the §@#%! it is !!! NE-VER.
Love you !!! Have fun ! :)
