Hi everyone,
Can anyone tell us what the highways are like north of Lake Superior (Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie)? Anyone that lives out there or who has ridden out there in the last year or two? We are debating riding north or south of Superior on our return to Ottawa in the next few weeks.
Thanks
Becky
We took the northern route - quite scenic with lots of lake views. Nice through lake Superior Provincial Park, but no supplies within the Park. Stock up in Wawa, then only limited provisions at a convenience store in Montreal River Harbour. Lots of HILLS through the Park, and one killer just before Saulte St Marie!! Only problem is that common throughout Ontario, minimum shoulder width along this highway!

Hi Becky
I have ridden around Lake Superior twice in both directions.
The first time in 1999 then again in 2001.
The hwy between Thunder Bay and the Soo has narrow shoulders but I found it great riding, there were a few construction spots that made it interesting a few times but a great ride. There is a hilly stretch north of the Soo trough Lake Superior Prov Park and the again up around Rossport.
North of White River there was a lot of truck traffic but the truck drivers were great, they watched out for us!
Overall I would rather ride north of Superior than south through the U.P. of Michigan. I used to live in the U.P. by Munising so maybe that colors my thinking!
I have a few photos that show what the roads are like it your interested
