Any recent information on the closure of HWY 1 in California?

Hello,

I have been told that HWY 1 is closed south of Monterey, CA. Does anyone out here know of the status of this closure? If it is still closed can someone recommend a best alternate route?

I belive it is closed at Big

I belive it is closed at Big Sur. It was because of the road collapsing down the hill. Hy 101 is the only alternative route. I went this way (Hy 101) last summer and you must ride through towns and are allowed on the freeway between towns. The freeway has a wide shoulder though. Good luck.
