In the process of wrapping up a tour in the Western States with two of my friends. They are heading back North to Canada for Christmas but I am considering doing the Baja on bike for the winter and then perhaps the rest of Mexico, down to Guatemala.
Anyone else thinking the same thing and looking for an extra rider?
Hi Eric -- I thought you might benefit from reading Dom Luther's blog starting in April of last year which is when he started riding down the Baja Peninsula and thence to Mexico City (and a bit beyond). He is headed south from there, but you might not catch up with him in time (he's in Mexico City right now): http://onebikeoneworld.com/2012/04/
not a problem finding ciclists in Baja in Dec,is the season to travel by bike.
so go ahead and meet some cilcists.
Thanks for the info guys. Will keep my eyes peeled for some others as I spin down the coast.
We will be about 6-8 weeks behind you, but I have a question. Are you going thru Tijuana? I am trying to figure out if we will be allowed to ride on the toll road. I have read that some cyclists are not made to get off, but recently it seems more of them are sent to the free road. If so, I would rather just find the free road and take it to Rosarito. Will you be writing a blog or journal where I can see what you did?
Did you see my earlier response to Eric? The blog link I posted tells you all about the free road and the toll road and even has video clips in it.
Here it is again: http://onebikeoneworld.com/2012/04/
I rode thru Baja a few years ago, and we rode the Toll Road from Tiajana down to La Mision. We walked around a few toll booths, thru towns or on side streets, and then hopped on to the toll road past the booth in a few cases, and in other cases, we were waved through. They didn't present a problem for us. At La Mision, there is a nice road that takes you off the coast and puts you back on the 1D just north of Ensenada; there is a hike along this route to a pretty amazing waterfall.
Have a great trip south!
Thanks so much, I'll put those directions in my notes along with those from the other blog. We are very excited, counting down the days!
I am thinking about it around dec 17 when school gets out. I live in El Cajon and speak the lingo
Nicholas, will you be keeping a blog/journal? I would love to hear about any road updates or cycling issues that you encounter in the baja. We will head there in late Jan. And thanks to the others who have given input. I would just like to hear about anything new that is encountered in addition, esp regarding riding on the toll road. Can't have TMI. Thanks, Marti
I've been biking down the CA coast (currently in LA) and am considering either continuing down Baja or taking Adventure Cycling's southern tier route. Let's chat about teaming up.
Sadly my plans have changed. I am hanging up te bike for a while and I am instead heading to Guatemala ASAP (on a plane 'ugh!') to get some Spanishtutoring for a couple months. I will eventually do the Baja but alas not this year. Best of luck to you though and hope the Coast treated you as well as it treated us.
