Transporting a bike in trains and buses in Slovenia, Groatia, Bosnia and Montenegro

Hello! I'm going to cycle from Austria through Slovenia, Groatia and Bosnia to Montenegro, but I don't have enough time to cycle all the way, so I'll have to take a bus or a train from time to time. Is it possible to travel by train or bus with a bike in those countries without putting it into a bag or taking the weels off? Thanks for any information

Tatiana hi! Bicycles on

Tatiana hi!

Bicycles on trains in Slovenia are perfectly OK. Here is a link to the Slovenian Railways where they explain how it works (no boxes, no taking the wheels off) - http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/passengers/slovenia/additional-offers/taking-your-bike-by-train
This describes the inland traffic - for international (i.e. taking it to Croatia) the info is only in Slovenian. Briefly, it does not say anything about boxing your bike. Apparently it costs 5 EUR for taking the bike, subject to availability of space.
As for buses, I have seen buses taking bikes on for a fee, again no box required. This was internal. No idea about international thou.

Hope you will enjoy and all the best!

I took a train from Zagreb to Maribor one month ago and it was exactly like you say. Around 5€ but no box or wheel off.

Taking trains

My experience in the region with the trains is that the best place to put the bike is at the very end of the train, as sometimes they will make you to do so and if you're not close to there, you'll have to get out and bring it at the end, which can be pain in the butt and be easily avoidable.
The first time it happened to me, I almost missed the train while I was on my way to the last wagon.
