The Villages Florida to Inverness Florida- safe route?

Hi,
We are renting Recumbent Trikes in Winter Garden FL and want to cycle north up to The Villages and then over to Inverness and then possibly over to the the Gulf Coast. Is it safe to cycle on Hwy. 44? Any advice is appreciated as to going from The Villages over to Inverness?
Timeline Dec. 20-24.
