Cycling in Mexico south of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route

My son and I are contemplating riding through Mexico for ten days or so south of the Great Divide Mountain Bike route this August. We are looking at a route through the high Chihuahua desert and down to Copper Canyon. Our draft route is here:
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/11490344

We have ridden in hot temperatures before (through Utah last summer with temps above 100 F) and just start very early and take lots of water, but I am worried about the temperatures and availability of water going through this area.

I am also worried about safety, specifically in terms of narcos. Does anyone have a sense of the safety of these back roads through Chihuahua?

Thanks for any info you can share!
