Hi! I just completed my tour across the US and I'm flying home to Norway from Los Angels, LAX airport. I'm planning to go to a bike shop and have them pack my bike in a cardboard box. Is cardboard allowed at LAX or do I need to buy a special suitcase for the bike? Thank you for any help on this!

USA, Flying home with bicycle from LAX
Hello,
if you are flying out of the US to Norway, cardboard is preferably. Its cheap and easy to dismantle. Remember to remove the pedals and set the handlebar side way. If you are using a suitcase or bicycle box, its expensive and economic wise for multiple trip over and over again. Good protection rating vs cardboard. If you are using KLM, dont have to use a box, just removed pedal.
Hope this helps.
If you are thinking of what security lets through (as in TSA), cardboard is allowed. I live in LA, and have helped several warmshowers guests fly out of LAX, including some with their bikes in cardboard boxes. A bike in a cardboard box is no problem in terms of security allowing it through.

It is difficulty these days to find a box at LAX, but most local bike stores will help you out. I do not tape the top of the box well as TSA will open it anyway. You will find a TSA inspection slip in your box when you go to unpack...
