Cycling from US to Belize? Questions
Hi, it depends where you want to cross the border. In fall 2016 I crossed from the US to Mexico in El Paso and cycled in the middle of the country south (Chihuahua, Torreon, Zacatecas, Leon, around Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, Tuxtla Gutierrez). I met no cyclists for weeks, so I assume most go along the coasts. On my route was a lot of desert and semi-desert.
It is forbidden to cycle on the toll roads (roads with a "D" in the name), but I recommend these. They have shoulders. I was only stopped and rejected once at a toll station. Maybe 20 times everbuddy ignored me or guided me around the cameras. Disadvantage: barbwire on both sides of the road, boring and less accomodation and food.
Be carefull at the borders. Immigration is not mandatory. Dont miss it!
We took this route ,https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1wFIAjZMepgLdJVU1qmjta5dslo4&ll=15.187292560935168%2C-95.39892187499998&z=5 in 2010, if you want to use the campingspots, please be kind and polite to your hosts so that other cyclists also will be welcomed. I would love it if you let us know if some spots are still available. We crossed west of El Paso near at Columbus. In columbus was/is a statepark.
