Routing Portland OR to Houston via 101/ 1

Starting in a month in the NW and riding the coast to California. Any thoughts on where to turn left to the east. San Fran or farther south? Is the coast all the way to LA a must see? Then ride the Route 66? or hop a train to El Paso? Thanks

Due to bridges being out both

Due to bridges being out both north and south of the Big Sur area (best area along the coast), I would head east at SF. However, since you are missing the best area, you might consider taking off east much sooner, i.e. using the ACA Northern Tier, Lewis & Clark, and/or TransAm sections. Once you get east of Rocky Mountain States, take almost any secondary highway south toward Texas.

If you headed east at SF, you could do ACA's Western Express over to Utah, then head over to Zion & Bryce Canyon National Parks before heading over to Monument Valley in extreme northern Arizona before reconnecting back up in Monticello, UT with the Western Express. Take to Kansas and head south. Best, John
