I am writing to ask for cross the border into Norway by bicycle.
I`m cycling in Russia and heading to Murmansk. and then I will cross the border into Norway. I made bicycle path as below.
Murmansk- Mezhdurechye- Sputnik- Zapolyarny(E105 road)-Norway border-Kirkenes
According to the Russia travel guide, the Kirkenes-Murmansk road is a sensitive border region. so no stopping is allowed along the Russian side of this road(motorcycle/car traveler).
I wonder if I can cross the border into Norway by bicycle. is it possible? Is there anyone who cycle that road?
Please advise me about this. thanks for reading.
I don't have experience with that route. But I remember well newspaper articles in 2015 about this route due the refugees tracks to Europe. See https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/aug/29/syrian-refugees-europe-arctic-circle-russia-norway
Hence it should be allowed to cross by bicycle but not by walking.
Thanks for reply. I have tried to get information about Russia-Norway border. unfortunately, I didn`t obtain accurate info until now.
I will update this post as soon as I get it.
Few years ago this border pass was closed for cyclists since too many syrian refugees was cross there. They bought cheap bicycles in Murmansk and went to Norway by bicycle. Was a rumor that almost all bicycles were sold there..
Fresh news about opening these border pass I'm personally don't heard.
But I can try to clarify this in our bicycle community.
Two months ago, I crossed the border into Norway. unfortunately, I could not cycling whole road. I passed through the last part(about 15Km) of near border road by minibus. cycling that area is prohibited. only vehicle(inc motorbike) can pass. but except for there, I could ride a bicycle.
I would like to share my experience with you.
I met three checkpoint until past through border. at that time, I showed security guard my passport and explained purpose, next route. After pass second checkpoint, I realized one car followed me. I approached the car. he was policeman. he told me he has a duty to protect foreigner come military area. He asked me where I sleep tonight. I told him I will go camping. he told me I had to sleep near Nikel. I pitched up tent near there as he is told. next morning, I crossed the border into Norway.
If you are considering cross the border into Norway, please note that there is restricted military area.
