I decided to realise a long held ambition to cycle to China when an opportunity of a career break came up. My wife, while supportive, does not share my passion & few it seems can drop their commitments to head off east.
It would be nice to share some of the experiences with another cyclist
On 3/3/18 I will fly to Istanbul & from there set off towards Cappadoccia then Erzerum , Kars & into Georgia [ 21/3/17] visiting Gori before arriving in Tbilis Easter weekend [ 1/4/18]. After a week spent with my visiting wife I will cycle to the Caucasus mountains cross into Azerbaijan & cycle to Baku. I have a contact there who can assist with a boat crossing to Aktau Kazakhstan from where I will head east to Karakalpakstan & the Oxus Valley in Uzbekistan. I aim to arrive in Aktau on April 19th & depending on my legs, the weather & access to water I will either cycle across the Ustyurt plateau[ desert] taking in the solitude & rock formations , or take the Train to Nukus .
The Uzbek tourist visa is limited to 30 days so my tour of Khiva Bukhara & Samarkand with camping stops along the way will end by the the 20th of Maywhen I cross into Tajikistan at Tursunzoda on the M41 road that becomes the classic Pamir Highway from Dushanbe to Osh . This last part usually takes 12-14 days but I would allow 17 days as permits for the Gorno Badakshan Autonomous Region are issued in Dushanbe.
From here I m undecided, either head east 170km to the Erkeshtam border then another 185km to Kashgar or north east to Lake Issy Kul ,into Kazakhstan to cross into China at Horgos & cycle to Urumqi
I m a meat eating, married man ,whose kids are at uni ,who cycles quite fast & would aim to cover a minimum of 50 miles over a day.
