Has anyone done it from New England going south? Advice on using a hybrid suburban, and hiking backpack on back instead of those wheel luggage things?

A backpack is too hot. You drip sweat down your back constantly. Also, people look upon you as homeless with a backpack and you are treated differently on the road. Up to you.
Thanks for the advice Jack. I could care less if others judge me based on a backpack or think i'm homeless to be honest.
Also, you want the weight on the bike, not on your back. Backpack weight is hard on your back and your derrière. You can tour with a hybrid, although they may not be as sturdy over the long haul. I've done a fair amount of touring with a hybrid, but my LHT is the bomb for touring.
Sarah any advice on a brand of bike that is productive and not thousands of dollars?
We've toured with Treks with success. Rode across SD & MN, across NE, and from Deadwood SD to Valentine NE with $350 Treks, My husband has a $600 Trek he rode from Demver to Minneapolis, halfway across CO and 1100 miles around MI and WI. We don't carry a lot of weight, as we stay in motels, and we both weigh less than 150; don't know if that makes a difference. Never had any mechanical issues nor broke a spoke. You might try used also; sometimes CrazyGuyonaBike.com has some good used touring bikes.

The first few times they were hybrids. The one h has now I'm not sure, but I think it's in their old 700 series. I see they have some "city" bikes that might be good. Just make sure you can put a rack on them. REI has some commuter bikes that might work too. Pete just went to a bike shop, told them what he wanted and price range.
