Cycling in Portugal July 2015

Hello all!

My girlfriend and I are going to be cycle-touring in Portugal for the month of July.(2015)
We land in Lisbon and will pedal our way north to Porto and then back to the capital. We won't carry camping gear.
We are looking for suggestions of scenic routes or interesting itineraries.
We are also hesitant about taking our helmets with us. Anyone knows if that would be major inconvenience riding bareheaded in the country?
Thanks for your help.

Portugal 2014 Porto - Sintra

Salut Annie and Luc,

last year we cycled from Porto to Sintra (near Lisbon).
Here you can see the whole trip but also the single tracks http://www.gpsies.com/mapFolder.do?id=32002
Most of the roads were quiet; sometimes steep, sometime unpaved, some cycling pathes,...
Only from Peniche to Colares there was heavy traffic. The next time we would choose another road..

About helmets - don't know we had helmets. Maybe you contact a local WS-member for further informations.

Greetings
Michaela

Wear a helmet!

I cycled the Alentejo Region in Portugal in April 2015 so can't help with itinerary going north. I can say that they drive very fast and don't give much space for cyclist. You should most definitely wear a helmet.
You will love Portugal. The people are very friendly and helpful. I hope to return to do the northern part.
