We are arriving in Paris beginning of May 2024, heading to Andermatt Switzerland to begin Eurovelo 15.

We are transporting our own bikes and gear.  I am looking for any advice on getting from Paris to Andermatt.

We are thinking of renting a car to drive to Zurich.  Or can anyone help with train advice?  From what we are reading you need to book ahead on the train that allows bike transport.  Boxed up or assembled?  Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Dana

All the Zurich - Andermatt info you need with detailed maps how to change trains along the way. https://www.raileurope.com/en-us/destinations/zurich-andermatt-train

I've been looking at the same trip for late May. Saw a lot of confusing info regarding bicycle reservations, etc. Was thinking to just go for it and hope for the best as I've found no definitive info. The trip from Zurich to Andermatt is only a couple of hours so figure it wouldn't be terrible if I got hung up for an hour or so here or there along the way. Also a very popular route for people with sporting gear of all sorts so can't be impossible?

Good idea on car from Paris. Traveling with bikes on trains crossing borders seems to be quite challenging unless you're on a small folding bike that fits into a zip bag.

Looks like a car rental will be too expensive.  Likely use the SNCF train to get to switzerland.

Hello, on TGV trains Paris to Basel you absolutely need to book a place for the assembled bike. There is only 3 place available per TGV (10€/bike). Not available on all trains. You are not allowed to carry a bike if you didn’t make a reservation before (you can do it on the website SNCF CONNECT.)

Another Solution is to take a TER train (regional) from Paris to Mulhouse. No need for reservation. You can buy it in the train station in Paris. You can take your bike with for free, then from Mulhouse you take again a TER train to Basel. In Basel train station you can make a reservation for you and your bike for a regional bahn to Andermatt station.

We have done the eurovelo15 three years ago, it was Fanta stic.

Thank you very much for the clear explanation of the trains.  We will likely take the local train as we wanted to assemble our bikes before departure.  Have a great day!
